Mashobra is the ideal alternative Himalayan retreat that travellers can consider when Shimla starts feeling too crowded. Located around 12 kilometres from Shimla at an altitude of approximately 2,146 metres, this tranquil village in Himachal Pradesh carries the charm of a classic hill retreat. At the same time, it avoids the tourist fatigue often associated with crowded destinations.

Dense apple orchards, cedar and oak forests, winding mountain trails, and scenic, relaxed surroundings define Mashobra’s character from the moment the road climbs away from the main Shimla highway. These natural surroundings create a peaceful retreat far removed from the pace of city life.

    Getting to Mashobra

A short drive from Shimla, depending on the weather and road conditions, is all that’s needed to get to Mashobra from Shimla. The journey features a scenic mountain route with forested ridgelines and iconic Himalayan mountain peaks.

During the day, taxis are regularly available at Shimla’s main taxi station to take you to Mashobra and do not require early reservations. If you arrive in Shimla by train along the historic Kalka-Shimla narrow-gauge railway, you can also take a taxi to Mashobra from the railway station.

    What to do in Mashobra

Mashobra’s popularity is mainly due to its capacity to provide a relaxing atmosphere, beautiful scenery, and outdoor activities that can be done without serious forethought or effort. The area surrounding the village is well known for its apple and plum orchards. It also offers some of the best places for long walks in April when the trees are in bloom or during the harvest season from July to September.

The Craignano Nature Park within the Mashobra area offers gentle forest trails through cedar and rhododendron woodland that suit leisurely morning walks perfectly throughout most of the year. Wildflower Hall, a heritage property originally used as a summer retreat by British viceroys and later by Indian prime ministers, is within the Mashobra area. It adds a fascinating historical layer to an otherwise entirely natural setting.

    Reserve forest and birdwatching

The reserve forest areas around Mashobra hold a quiet and underappreciated birdwatching scene that rewards visitors willing to rise early and move slowly. Himalayan bulbuls, verditer flycatchers, rufous treecreepers, and several species of laughingthrush have all been recorded regularly in the forested slopes around the village.

Trekking through the local woodlands in the mornings affords you the greatest chance to spot wild animals while it is still relatively cool and before most birds have gone quiet. Taking a simple pair of binoculars along with an area birding guide allows for a much richer experience while walking in the forest during the early morning. No special equipment or advanced knowledge is required to enjoy the activity.

    Where to stay in Mashobra

The quaint, intimate setting of Mashobra’s accommodations is a natural fit for a village that has such a leisurely pace. There are several heritage hotels, boutique hotels, and forest lodges in Mashobra, all providing guests with quality comfort and a peaceful natural environment. This experience is very different from the atmosphere offered by the larger hotels in downtown Shimla.

Browsing hotels in Mashobra and prioritising properties with forest or orchard views makes an enormous difference to how restorative the overall stay actually feels. Booking well ahead between April and June and again in October is essential as Mashobra’s limited inventory of quality rooms fills up quickly during these peak periods.

    The bottom line

Mashobra offers something increasingly rare in Himachal Pradesh’s overtouristed hill circuit. It sits close enough to Shimla for easy access but feels worlds apart in surroundings and pace. Leisure travellers who find it rarely regret lingering longer than planned.
